Did you know that 40% of the unemployed are Millennials?*
What ever happened to those SAT/ACT tests we slaved over to up our scores? The APs? Our GPAs? Our prestigious alma maters, double degrees and distinctions? You thought graduation was the end of your worries and then you add those letters after your name and…
“How many years of experience do you have? I have 35 years of ‘real life’ experience. You’re on the other end of the spectrum. You should appreciate any job or opportunity you get.”
*pulls hair out* Ah! What am I going to do? I can’t get experience overnight!
Now first, let’s discuss something. Your elders don’t respect you because, probably, they’re intimidated by you. You are part of the technology generation. What comes naturally to you doesn’t to them. They have to work harder. And so they boast their experience over your lack of it.
But listen. You have something they lost a long time ago. Our generation is full of idealists, inventors who don’t take “no” as an answer but rather as a challenge. You may not have years and years of experience but you have exponential. So don’t let their cynicism dilute you into a dilemma.
So you can’t get a job? Create one! 60% of Millennials are entrepreneurs and 90% perceive entrepreneurship as a mentality.**
So take those experience mongrels’ red signal “No” as a green signal to “Go!” Let’s get a move on solving unemployment by employing ourselves.Disclaimer: I’m not proposing we disrespect our elders. Rather, that we understand: Wisdom does not come in years but rather discernment. You can be 50 in age and 20 at heart. Or you could be 20 in age and 50 in heart. “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 3:16 NKJV).
